Runes

A rune is an item which is used to add a special ability to weapon Grade D and above. Runes are useful in any aspects of the game: when you hunt Raid Bosses, or when you fight other players.

There are 8 types of runes: Sigel, Tyrr, Othell, Aeore, Feoh, Iss, Wynn and Yul, each of them has 13 levels. You can increase the level with Combining. Each of the runes available in the game allows you to add one of the two special abilities at your choice.

Runes can be either unsealed (ready for adding to your weapon) or sealed. When you double-click a sealed rune, you get one random rune of the corresponding level.

  • Runes can be obtained as trophies for killing Raid Bosses.

Buying from NPCs

Sealed Rune Lv. 1 can be purchased from Olympiad Manager (available for characters level 55+, after their 2nd class transfer) for Mark of Battle — 140 pcs. and 123,483 adena.

Combination

Runes have 13 levels. The higher the level, the more powerful special abilities are available when you add it to your weapon.

  • You can increase the level with combining. The combining window is available by clicking a special button in your character's inventory.
  • You need 2 runes of the same type and different levels to combine them. For example, Feoh's Rune Lv. 8 + Feoh's Rune Lv. 1 = Feoh's Rune Lv. 9. You cannot combine runes of different types (Example: Sigel + Tyrr).
  • In order to increase the level, you need to have 1 rune of level 1 - you can only place it into the second (right) slot in the combination window.
  • There's a chance that you may fail when trying to increase a rune level. When combination fails, the main rune placed into the first (left) slot disappears, The rune level 1 in the second slot remains. You can use it for further combination attempts as a 'catalyst' for the other slot.

Adding a special ability

Different actions with runes are available if you choose the option of learning runes.

  • NPC Blacksmith in any township (except starting villages) will add a special ability to your weapon.
  • A special ability can be added to weapon Grade D and above...
  • You can add a rune even to an equipped weapon.
  • When you add a special ability to an item, its modification and enchant remain.
  • Only one rune can be added to a weapon.
  • Each rune has 2 effects, however you can choose only 1.
  • Adding a special ability never fails.

Replacing a rune

  • NPC Blacksmith in any township (except starting villages) will replace a special ability of your weapon.
  • To change the effect, in the window drag the new rune to replace the current one in the dialogue of adding a special ability.
  • When you replace a special ability of an item, its modification and enchant remain.
  • Replacing a special ability never fails.
' Warning! When you replace a rune with the new one, the old one disappears (and doesn't return to your inventory).

Replacing a rune

  • NPC Blacksmith in any township (except starting villages) will remove a rune from your weapon.
  • Removing a rune never fails.
  • The removed rune goes back to your character's inventory.

Fee for adding, replacing and removing a special ability

Adding, replacing and removing a special ability are done for a fee (gemstones of the corresponding grade). When you change a special ability, you need less gemstones, than when you add a new one. The table below shows the fees for adding, replacing and removing a special ability.

Rune exchange from Blacksmiths

NPC Blacksmith in any township (except starting villages) exchanges 2 unnecessary runes of the same type and level for one sealed random rune of the same level.

Upgrading runes to Super runes

NPC Blacksmith in any township (except starting villages) exchanges runes level 8-13 to Super runes. To do so, you need a runes level 8-13, Gemstone (A-grade) — 8 pcs. and 24,900,000 adena.

  • You will get a Super rune of the same level as the one you've exchanged.
  • Super runes cannot be combined.
